Joe Exotic has reached out to Gypsy Rose Blanchard in an attempt to get out of jail. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Joe Exotic's story, it was well documented in the hit Tiger King documentary on Netflix, which gripped the world in 2020.
Exotic, whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage, was sentenced to 21 years in prison on a murder-for-hire charge by a federal judge in 2022. This sentencing was a year shorter than the 22-year term he received back in January 2020.
The 60-year-old former zookeeper was convicted in 2020 for attempting to hire two individuals to kill Carole Baskin, an animal rights activist and the CEO of Big Cat Rescue. Despite consistently denying the allegations, Exotic's involvement was revealed in a secretly recorded meeting where he allegedly offered $10,000 to an undercover government agent to carry out the deed. During the meeting in December 2017, Exotic reportedly instructed the agent to "cap her and drive off."
Exotic has made a few attempts to be freed from prison by appealing to public figures such as Donald Trump and Kourtney Kardashian, but his pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
He has now turned his attention to Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who was recently released from prison herself spending time behind bars for her part in the murder of her mother.
Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement in the death of Dee Dee Blanchard but was released back in December after serving seven.
Blanchard recently took to Instagram to share a mirror selfie, and Exotic saw this as a chance to appeal to her better nature.
Seizing the opportunity, Exotic's official Instagram account commented on Blanchard's post, urging for assistance, stating: "Help #freejoeexotic". Potentially seeing the similarities between his case and Blanchard's, Exotic could see her release as a potential opportunity for assistance in his own case.
Amidst his legal battles, Exotic faces health challenges, including prostate cancer that is believed to have spread to his bladder. Despite this, he has declined further testing and treatment, opting for a do-not-resuscitate order, stating: “I want to stay here and just let it take its course,” per the Mirror.
As for Blanchard, she has been enjoying her newfound freedom with her husband Ryan Anderson, and has been open about her love life with him.
Speaking on The Viall Files podcast, Blanchard opened up about her first moments of freedom. "My husband picked me up and then we drove to a hotel that we got locally," she said.
"We spent the night, we had our first intimate moments as husband and wife, got to consummate our marriage, which was great." When questioned about her experiences, given her history of abuse, Blanchard went on: "It was so sweet. I have a past of sexual abuse, so I was molested when I was nine by my grandfather, and in my relationship with Nicholas there was some sexual abuse, it was just a really toxic relationship.
"So coming from a place where I never had a sex life, I never felt safe, it was like being used and abused, one person after another. With Ryan, he didn't say, 'We have to have sex the first night'. It was like, 'If you want to, let it happen naturally.'"
