Over its nearly two-decade tenure, The Ellen DeGeneres Show featured some particularly memorable interviews, alongside a fair share of uncomfortable moments. While the show showcased numerous emotional guests, the awkward instances were often cringe-worthy for viewers. One notably uncomfortable interview conducted by DeGeneres took place in 2019 with Dakota Johnson.
Indeed, the exchange has resurfaced in recent days, as Monday (27 November) marked the fourth anniversary of the infamous interview.
At that time, Dakota Johnson appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote her new film, The Peanut Butter Falcon. While the conversation initially revolved around the movie, a particular segment at the end caught everyone's attention.
The discussion quickly shifted to the fact that Johnson had recently turned 30, prompting DeGeneres to assert that she was never invited to the birthday party. However, Johnson appeared dissatisfied with the response and promptly countered, saying, "Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen, you were invited." "No, the last time I appeared on the show, which was last year, you gave me a hard time about not inviting you, but the truth is, I didn't even know you wanted to be invited."
"Well, who wouldn't want to be invited to a party?" DeGeneres quickly retorted.
"But I wasn't aware that you even liked me," Johnson insisted. This prompted a notable response from DeGeneres, who asserted that she has always been fond of the actor and wouldn't have invited her on the show so frequently if she weren't a fan.
"But I did extend an invitation, and you didn't come," Johnson insisted.
After a brief exchange with her producer, DeGeneres was informed that she was out of town that week: "Oh yeah, I had that thing." People online have been speaking about the interview in recent days after the recent anniversary, with many flocking to X (formerly known as Twitter) to cringe over the moment all these years later.
"Four years ago today Dakota Johnson ended Ellen's whole career with 'actually that's not the truth Ellen'," one person penned on the popular social media platform.
A second added: "Dakota really clowned Ellen at her own show."
While a third remarked: "4 years ago, Dakota Johnson called out Ellen DeGeneres for lying about not being invited to her birthday party."
Well, this isn't the first time DeGeneres has faced criticism over her treatment of guests as earlier this year, Emily Ratajkowski slammed the host for quizzing Taylor Swift on her dating history, labeling the exchange as 'f**ked up'.
