Becoming a parent signifies a profound shift in perspective and an entirely fresh way of looking at one’s life. When new life is ushered into the world, parents dedicate themselves to ensuring the best possible upbringing for their son or daughter.
That said, within the nine months a mother carries her child, the unexpected can unfold.
Ange Wakeling, already a mother to daughter Dottie, found herself in an unforeseen situation upon discovering she was pregnant once again. Little did she know that her journey was about to take an astonishing turn.
As the days passed, Ange and her husband faced an unimaginable choice — one that would shatter their hearts…
Deep within us all resides an innate sense of right and wrong. Our conscience guides us, acting as a compass, if you will, indicating when to stand firm and when to yield in various situations.
For Ange Wakeling, a mother from Weston-super-Mare, England, this gut feeling would prove to be a saving grace in more ways than one.
In 2022, Ange’s world was flipped upside down when she learned that she was pregnant once again. She and her husband had yearned to expand their family for years – but with no results.
”It wasn’t as easy as when I fell pregnant with Dottie and every month we were faced with disappointment. I had thought I was pregnant at Christmas in 2020, but then we had a negative pregnancy test result and it was devastating,” Ange told The Sun.
But finally, they got the news that they would be able to give their daughter a beloved sibling. All of a sudden, Dottie was on her way to becoming a big sister, and the small family was set to grow.
But the unexpected occurred during one of the first ultrasounds: Ange wasn’t carrying just one child in her belly. Instead, the ultrasound technician said that there were three precious babies inside.
The news was enough to shake any expectant parent, and Ange was no exception. Her thoughts raced as she grappled with the magnitude of this impending expansion of her family.
With each passing day, Ange’s belly swelled with the promise of three new lives. Friends, family, and even strangers were captivated by her story, rallying around her with words of encouragement and hope.
However, Ange’s elation swiftly transformed into heart-wrenching devastation. As she awaited the moment that she could bring forth her little miracles, she was warned about the risks involved in proceeding with the pregnancy of all three babies.
Back then, Ange weighed 308 pounds – a factor that doctors highlighted as increasing her vulnerability to the potentially fatal condition known as pre-eclampsia.
Owing to her excess weight, she also faced the possibility of developing high blood pressure and diabetes. In addition to that, Ange was on the potential brink of an exceptionally premature labor, potentially further jeopardizing the survival of her children.
Doctors then presented her and her husband with an offer that left them stunned: to consider aborting one or even two of their unborn children…
”When they asked me if I wanted to terminate one or two of the triplets I was so shocked, I couldn’t believe it,” Ange told The Sun.
“Chris and I immediately said no, but the doctor asked again and I had to say no again, that I wasn’t prepared to terminate any of my children.”
Ange realized that nurturing her trio of infants bore substantial hazards – but the shocked mother refused to sacrifice any of her babies. When Ange was expecting her daughter Dottie, she heard the same thing and was advised to terminate her pregnancy due to her weight.
But, just as with Dottie, it would turn out that Ange knew something that the doctors did not.
As it happened, her children were just as determined as their mother to pull through.
During the course of the pregnancy, Ange learned that the triplets each had their own amniotic sac and placenta, significantly reducing the risks of something terrible happening to them.
In August 2022, Ange and her husband welcomed their long-awaited trio of bundles through a cesarean section.
An emergency team was on standby, prepared to intervene if the little ones were in distress. However, their services were unnecessary. Olive, Ada, and Tucker were all born healthy and well.
As Ange continues her journey, now as a proud mother of triplets and a daughter, her story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us all that within life’s unexpected twists, lies the opportunity for our most extraordinary moments.
”I look at my family now and I feel incredibly blessed. I want to show that it’s OK to be a bigger mum and a good parent too. Yes there were risks to my pregnancy, but we should be given hope, not offered a termination,” Ange says and continues:
”Every woman has a right to be a mum, whatever your size.”
